Session Summary: We often refer to an interface as the “GUI” (Gooey), or Graphic User Interface. In e-Learning, it is more about the learner than the graphics, but we tend to get lost in the presentation. The “LUI” (Looey), or Learner User Interface focuses on the visual attractiveness of the graphics with an emphasis on usability and visual communication. With a better understanding of the Looey concept, an e-Learning course developer can rapidly design themes around content. Themes can then be reused in the form of templates for rapid development.

Session participants will learn how the LUI enhances the appeal to an e-Learning course themed around the content. You’ll learn that engaging a learner in the first few seconds determines their attentiveness throughout the course and that communicating with visual elements will help them retain information. You’ll learn how to put it all together, with the learner at the center, and build an interface that supports the content rather than hindering it.

Audience:
Intermediate designers, developers, and others with knowledge of instructional and interface design. Experience using graphic editing software and/or e-Learning development tools will be helpful.

BIO:
Kevin Thorn was a tactical trainer in the Army. After retirement, he attended Christian Brothers University and earned a B.S. in Information Technology Management. He taught himself instructional theories by reading and studying others and he taught himself elearning skills using a variety of software development tools. Kevin currently works for AutoZone in Memphis, TN. as the Manager of Learning Technologies. He is fully immersed in the design & development of e-Learning courses and manages the company’s LMS. Kevin’s experience is in e-Learning development, instructional design, graphics design, LMS implementation, and e-Learning content management. He is also a freelance illustrator, cartoonist, caricaturist, and animator.

Topic: Subject Matter Experts — A Marriage for Better or Worse

Why are SMEs so difficult to get along with? Why don’t they take the advice of learning professionals on learning related matters? How can we get them to give us the feedback we need, on time? How can I keep them from changing their minds and adding to the project scope when it’s too late? If these are questions that bother you, you will get answers in this session. The answers to these questions come from more than one source. Some of the answers lie in project management process, and some require us to borrow from the skills of performance consultants. All issues and answers are the result of research done with several companies and are a compilation of their best practices.

Speaker Biography:

Peter Bloom is an E-Learning Training Analyst at ALSAC, the fundraising arm of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  He has been in the e-learning field for more that 20 years and has developed e-learning courses for Apple, IBM, United Airlines and Cisco System.  His first opportunity to manage a Learning Management System was at ALSAC.

Topic:  E-Learning at ALSAC

Peter will be talking about how e-learning is used at ALSAC.  This meeting will be a discussion of the tools they use at ALSAC and the
approach they use for e-learning design and production.
